If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking, “Well, I already messed up today… I’ll just start over tomorrow,” or skipping a workout if you can't do the whole thing or throwing in the towel the second you hit one bump in your plan...you're not alone! This is SO common but it's also all-or-nothing thinking and it’s one of the biggest reasons so many women struggle with long-term weight loss.
All or nothing thinking is one of the biggest predictors of weight regain. And it makes sense. If your ONLY option is to be all in or all out...it's likely that you won't be very consistent. Luckily there is a way to ditch your all or nothing thinking: cultivating more cognitive flexibility. It’s the mindset shift that allows you to move away from perfectionism, adjust in real time, and actually stay consistent long-term.
Cognitive flexibility is basically the opposite of black-and-white thinking. Instead of labeling foods as “good” or “bad” or seeing your day as a total failure because you went over your calories, you learn to adapt.
Here’s why this helps you be more consistent with fat loss:
All-or-nothing thinking predicts weight regain. If you’re either “all in” or “all out,” consistency becomes impossible.
The diet industry thrives on rigidity. Rules like “never eat carbs” or “always track perfectly” set you up to quit the second life gets messy.
Flexibility leads to freedom. With cognitive flexibility, you can handle things like an unplanned happy hour or a busy week without throwing in the towel.
In this episode of The SweatSimple Podcast, I’ll walk you through how to spot all-or-nothing thinking, practical ways to build more flexibility, and why this skill is the real secret to long-term success..
