How to get out of the yo yo diet cycle

What I'd Do Differently If I Was Starting My Fitness Journey

If you’re stuck in the cycle of losing weight…only to gain it right back, you’re not alone.

This is where MOST of the women who come to work with me in 1:1 coaching are at and in fact...this is the cycle I was in myself before I was a coach.

Maybe you start a new diet on Monday, you track calories for a while, then fall “off track” when life gets busy. Or maybe the number on the scale determines whether you feel successful—or like a total failure.

In today's episode of The Sweat Simple Podcast I'm giving you the advice that I WISH I had when I was a chronic yo yo dieter. Because it's not that you need more willpower or a stricter diet. It’s that your current strategy is setting you up to repeat the same frustrating patterns over and over again.

Here's How To Get Out Of The Yo Yo Diet Cycle:

👉 Ditch the "it happened moving on" Saying “It happened, I’ll move on” might feel like you’re removing the guilt, BUT without reflecting on why it happened, you’re leaving yourself open to repeat the same behavior. Sustainable fat loss requires awareness, not just avoidance.

👉 Waiting for perfect conditions is a trap Life doesn’t magically create the perfect moment for weight loss. Waiting until things “calm down” or you feel ready is really just a delaying taking action. If you want long-term weight loss, you have to learn how to stay consistent—even when things aren’t ideal.

👉 Passive calorie tracking isn't helpful Tracking calories can be a helpful tool, but passively logging numbers without paying attention to hunger cues, food quality, or patterns in your eating habits keeps you stuck. That’s why many people see short-term success but can’t keep the weight off.

👉 The scale doesn’t have to control you Your relationship with the scale can either make or break your progress. Do you want to dread stepping on the scale every morning? Or have it not impact your journey.

👉 Doing the same thing over and over won’t work Restrictive diets, detoxes, and relying on sheer willpower may give you temporary results—but if you’ve tried them before and always end up back at square one, it’s a sign you need a different approach. Long-term fat loss is about building habits and shifting your mindset, not chasing the next quick fix.

If you want to stop the yo yo diet cycle and finally lose fat for good, you have to let go of perfection, stop relying on willpower, and start focusing on strategies that actually fit into your real life. I'm breaking it ALL down in this episode of The Sweat Simple Podcast.
