We all have those days where we think, “I just don’t want to.”
Maybe it’s getting back into routine after vacation. Maybe you’re buried in work and can’t imagine squeezing in a workout. Or maybe the idea of tracking your food feels like way too much effort.
In this episode of The SweatSimple Podcast, I'm breaking down what’s really happening when those “I don’t want to” feelings hit — and how to navigate them without falling off track.
Because here’s the truth: even the most consistent, motivated people feel resistance sometimes. The difference is they’ve learned how to work with those feelings instead of waiting for motivation to magically appear.
💭 Why “I Don’t Want To” Feelings Are Totally Normal
First things first — nothing has gone wrong when you feel unmotivated. Everyone experiences ebbs and flows in their motivation levels, and it doesn’t mean you’ve lost progress or that you’re not disciplined enough.
These feelings are often just signals that your brain is craving comfort or familiarity. The good news? You can still take action even when you don’t feel like it.
How to Work Through Resistance
Normalize it. Remind yourself this is part of the process. Everyone hits resistance — what matters is how you respond to it.
Reflect on past wins. Think back to a time when you didn’t feel like showing up, but you did anyway. What helped you then? You already have proof that you can do hard things.
Lower the barrier. Make it easier to start. Instead of saying you’ll do a full workout, just commit to five minutes. Instead of meal prepping everything, prep one lunch. Momentum builds quickly once you begin.
Plan for it. Instead of being surprised by low-motivation days, expect them. Have a “bare minimum” plan ready for when these feelings show up — a shorter workout, a go-to meal, or even a mindset reminder.
Remember: it’s temporary. Feelings of resistance will pass. Don’t let a fleeting mood dictate long-term decisions.
Working through the "I Don't Wanna" Feelings on Your Fitness Journey
When you stop seeing low motivation as a problem and start seeing it as something to navigate, everything changes.
You’ll realize that consistency isn’t about always wanting to do the thing — it’s about doing it anyway in ways that feel manageable.
That’s what sustainable health and fitness is really about: having the tools to keep going even when it’s not easy or exciting.
