How Your Childhood Shapes Your Weight Loss Success

Updated: Aug 29, 2025

What I'd Do Differently If I Was Starting My Fitness Journey

Our relationship with fitness, nutrition, our body image, even self sabotage and failure often starts in the household we grew up in.

What we learned about food and exercise, how food was talked about, how bodies were talked about, if we saw positive examples or never ending diets...this ALL impacts our own relationship with food, exercise and weight loss.

In this episode of The SweatSimple Podcast, I’m sharing how my own childhood experiences — from being part of the “clean plate club” to labeling certain foods as “good” or “bad” — shaped my relationship with food, exercise, my body, and even my fat loss success.

How Your Childhood Shapes Your Weight Loss Success

In this episode I'm breaking down:

  • How childhood shapes your relationship with food and impacts your long-term eating habits.

  • Why parental influence, school, friends, and media can all affect your dieting struggles later in life.

  • The hidden ways childhood food rules can lead to self-sabotage in weight loss.

  • How to unlearn old patterns so you can finally reach your goals

  • How to raise kids (or influence the next generation) to have a healthy relationship with food from the start.

This is a topic I'm EXTREMELY passionate about because I've seen first hand how much these childhood messages impact our ability to lead a healthier lifestyle. I KNOW that we have an opportunity to raise the next generation to have a much healthier relationship with food and weight loss.

Many women I coach grew up in households where finishing every bite was expected, dessert was a “reward,” or eating certain foods came with guilt. These childhood eating habits don’t just disappear when we become adults — they shape the way we approach weight loss, how we feel about our bodies, and whether we see food as the enemy or as fuel.

By understanding where these patterns come from, we can finally stop the yo-yo dieting cycle, end the constant food guilt, and create a more balanced relationship with food — one we actually enjoy living with.
